Artists and Galleries
Like everything in the Valley, it is the hidden-away aspect that is so alluring when it comes to checking out the arts and crafts. From wood to paper, silver to stone, ceramic to fabric, you will find the works of artisan's in small home galleries up and down the Valley. Admire totem poles, sun masks and other wooden items as well as jewellery. One carver has been recognized with a prestigious award from The National Museum of the American Indian in New York City. Custom-made items by a Bella Coola artisan may include a gorgeous quilt, wooden furnishings or uniquely designed ceramic tiles. Go down the driveway to a potter's private studio that also exhibits other local works. Spend time in this pleasant gallery, chatting with the potter who does both stoneware and Raku. Admire the large canvases of a local wildlife artist whose work is exhibited nationally. Once you see the customized knives by a local artisan you realize they are truly works of art.
Tucked down another road, find handicrafts, cards and artwork in a charming gallery attached to a nursery and organic store. A well-known nature photographer calls the Valley home; his books can be purchased at Kopas Store along with other arts and crafts.
