The Bella Coola Valley is tucked into the Coast Mountains about one-third of the way up the
province of British Columbia. While it is remote, it is also surprisingly easy to access. Whichever way you choose to arrive, the journey will be memorable because of the astonishing and diverse scenery.
By vehicle, arrive via Highway 20; road travellers will have tales to tell of the last leg of their journey coming down "The Hill". The journey to Bella Coola aboard BC Ferries is truly where the adventure begins. From the time you leave Port Hardy, on the northern tip of Vancouver Island, you are floating through unsurpassed scenery. This crossing through Queen Charlotte Strait to the mid-coast follows the stunning coastline of granite cliffs, misty green forests and deep fjords with few signs of civilization. Watch for sea lions on small islands and stay alert for whales and dolphins. By scheduled air service, you swoop into the verdant valley after gaping at snow-crested alpine peaks.
The bald eagle inhabits all parts of the Bella Coola Valley. They are present all year round but gather in large flocks during the spring and fall salmon runs.
