Things To Do - Land Adventures
The Bella Coola valley offers a mind-boggling diversity of outdoor recreation in this amazing landscape. Consider that the eastern edge of the Valley is in Tweedsmuir Provincial Park, the province's largest with 981,000 hectares (2.4 million acres) encompassing an ancient volcano, old-growth forests, gorgeous meadows, tucked-away lakes and fast-flowing rivers. This is backcountry as good as it gets. Throughout the Valley, sighting wildlife is a frequent occurrence - be it birds -- or bears.
This region showcases waterfalls. Close to the town of Bella Coola, stroll a short distance to view Clayton Falls or take a more ambitious hike -- perhaps guided -- into Hunlen Falls, Odegaard Falls or Schoolhouse Mountain Falls.
Throughout the Valley a network of trails is a playground of pleasure. For hikes that showcase old-growth trees, check out Saloompt Forest Trail or Snootli Creek Regional Park. Hike the Gray Jay Lake Trail or go above MGurr Lake for fantastic views of the Coast Mountains and fjords. Head into the backcountry for a close-up view of Purgatory Glacier at the end of Nusatsum Forestry Service Road.
Explore the mountains in the saddle - of a mountain bike or on horseback. If you are into high adventure, -- explore the mountains and glaciers south of the Valley -- a mountaineering paradise since the first attempt of Mount Saugstad was made in the 1930s.
